Turkey has already negotiated a major agreement with the EU, the customs union, meeting the 1995 deadline. In 2002 at the Copenhagen European Council, EU leaders gave Turkey a rendezvous of the end of 2004 to comply with the political criteria for accession. Both deadlines were met successfully.

The objective that I am trying to illustrate here is that, as hard as it is for me to say it, Turkey should not join the European Union. My reasons are two-fold; one, even on the European side of Turkey, it is ever apparent that this is not Europe, or at least the idea of Europe that the EU is trying to.
Turkey should not join the EU because the EU should not exist in the first place. While the premise of the EU is good, it is ultimately bad for interests through out the world. Each nation should be sovereign and treating each nation as a state marginalizes local government and creates a bureaucracy that is hard to break if the system fails to work properly.
